The Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music was set up by the Royal Academy of Music and the Royal College of Music in 1889.

The Royal Manchester College of Music (now the Royal Northern College of Music) and the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and  Drama (now the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland) joined ABRSM as subsidiary partners in 1947, and became full partners in 1985.

Together, these Royal Schools form ABRSM’s governing body, which has overall supervisory responsibility for ABRSM. It meets regularly with the Chief Executive to review progress and plans across all ABRSM activities, with the Executive Directors for Syllabus & Publishing and Finance & Administration in attendance.

The governing body is made up of the Principals of the four Royal Schools of Music together with one more representative of each school, typically a member of their governing body with financial expertise. The Chairman is independent, with no links to any of the Royal Schools.

The governing body appoints the Chief Executive, to whom they delegate executive responsibility for all ABRSM activities. The Executive Director: Finance & Administration is the Company Secretary.
