Current Exam Session: Late Booking and Rescheduling Exams

Thank you to everyone who’s booked exams. To help you with your exam arrangements at this exceptionally busy time, please be aware that there are number of services available to you by logging in to your ABRSM account. 

Online Theory exam

All applicants who have made a booking for the Online Theory exams in November were sent their candidates’ log in details by email between 23-25 October

Please follow the link in the email which provides checklists for applicants, candidates and Responsible Adults and the link to the necessary software.

Exam booking opens on 28 September

We’re pleased to confirm that our exam booking periods are opening as planned on Monday 28 September with Public Venue exams going ahead as long as we can run them safely and in line with government guidance. With new remotely-assessed Performance Grades, online Music Theory exams at Grades 1 to 5 and the current COVID situation, we know there’s lots of information to take in. Please read on for a summary of booking information with links to key documents and guidance that you might find useful if you’re booking exams from next week.

COVID arrangements for forthcoming exams

Our face-to-face practical exams (Prep Test, Performance Assessment, Practical Grades and ARSM) and paper-based Music Theory exams (Grades 6 to 8) will be going ahead at Public Venues as planned, as long as we can run them safely and in line with the latest government guidance.

Due to COVID restrictions, we are offering a reduced number of Public Venues for practical and Music Theory exams and have special arrangements in place, including guidance for everyone visiting our venues and an amended cancellations policy for Private Visit and Public Venue exams.

Face-to-face practical exams at Public Venues

The booking period for these exams opens on Monday 28 September and closes on Monday 12 October. The exam session runs from 9 November to 19 December.

For the widest selection of dates and venues, please book early. Once the booking period has closed and exam dates are confirmed, you can log in to change an exam appointment (subject to availability). You can do this up to 48 hours before an exam date. Candidates (parents/carers) with an account can also change an appointment. It may also be possible to make a late booking (subject to availability), once the booking period has closed and exam dates are confirmed. You can book into an available slot up to 48 hours before an exam date.

Remotely-assessed Performance Grade and ARSM exams

The booking period opens on Monday 28 September and closes on Monday 5 October. The exam session runs from 19 October to 7 November. We are also planning to offer another exam session for remotely-assessed Performance Grade and ARSM exams in early 2021 with the booking period in December 2020. We will confirm dates as soon as we can.

Our examiners assess these exams remotely from a video recording submitted by the candidate. The recording can be made at a time and in a location of the candidate’s choice.

Before booking an exam it’s very important that everyone involved reads our Guidance for Remotely-assessed Performance Grade Exams, which covers setting up and recording the exam. You can find this, along with syllabuses, videos and details of our special temporary arrangements for accompaniment at www.abrsm.org/performancegrades.

Separate Guidance for Remotely-assessed ARSM Exams is available at www.abrsm.org/arsmdiploma.

To book an exam, log in to your ABRSM account and select the ‘Public Venue’ option.

  • During the booking period you can select an exam submission date. This is the latest date for submitting the video recording.
  • Once you’ve booked an exam you can submit the recording at any point up to and including the submission date.
  • Once the booking period has closed and dates are confirmed, you can log in to change a submission dates (subject to availability). You can do this up to 48 hours before a submission date. Candidates (parents/carers) with an account can also change submission dates.
  • It may be possible to make a late booking (subject to availability), once the booking period has closed and dates are confirmed. You can book into an available slot up to 48 hours before an exam submission date.
  • Please note, for all remotely-assessed exams you must provide an email address for the candidate (or parent/carer).

Online Music Theory exams: Grades 1 to 5

The booking period opens on Monday 28 September and closes on Monday 12 October. Exams will take place on 10 November at 5.00pm.

Music Theory exams at Grades 1 to 5 are now available as an online assessment only. Candidates take their exam in any location where they have access to a laptop or desktop computer with a webcam and the internet. There are some small changes to the questions and the syllabus for these exams. Full details along with free Sample Papers and Model Answers are available on our website.

Paper-based Music Theory exams: Grades 6 to 8

The booking period opens on Monday 28 September and closed on Monday 12 October. Exams will take place on 10 November at 5.00pm. Please note, we are unable to accept any late bookings for Music Theory exams.
