Grade examining recruitment process

Initial Training and Assessment Course guidance notes (PDF)

Once we have received your application form, we will contact your two referees and your application will then be passed for review. If successful, you will be invited to interview at our offices in London.

The next stage is the Initial Training and Assessment Course (ITAC), a three-day course which takes place on three occasions each year. The first two days will be a combination of assessment and training, with the final day featuring examinations. ITACs are fully residential and a contribution towards food and board is payable to ABRSM in order to secure your place on the next available course. Please refer to the guidance notes for details.

If you are successful following the ITAC, you will then be allocated to four individual training days in the subsequent exam session alongside a different Trainer examiner for each training day. You will both examine candidates but the Trainer will initially administer the majority of exams. As the days progress, you will lead more of the assessments until the fourth day where you will administer a full day of exams.

Resident outside the UK?

To be eligible to apply, you are required to provide documentary evidence that you have the right to work in the United Kingdom in accordance with the Immigration, Asylum and Nationality Act 2006. Should you be appointed as an examiner, you would have to be prepared to come to the UK regularly to examine. ABRSM cannot cover travel expenses for interviews.

All training currently takes place in England and, whilst travel expenses for trainee examiners are reimbursed once they are in the UK, we will only be able to make a donation towards travel costs to get to the UK. Should you be appointed to the panel, similar rules relating to the cost of travelling to the UK apply.

In order to avoid potential conflicts of interest, examiners who live outside the UK would never be asked to examine in their country of residence, or indeed any country where they had lived or taught for any significant period of time.
