Born in Ipoh, Malaysia, Bang Hean’s teachers include Serena Chow and Rickie Oui. He was the first-prize winner of the First National Mozart Piano Competition in 1987. Following his success in the LRSM Music Performance diploma in that same year, ABRSM awarded him a four-year scholarship to study at the Royal College of Music (RCM), London.
There, Bang Hean studied with Yonty Solomon, John Blakely and Dennis Lee. He won numerous prizes at the RCM, and awards from the Anthony Saltmarsh Prize and the Countess of Munster Musical Trust enabled him to undergo a year of postgraduate studies with Professor Ilonka Deckers in Milan, Italy.
After returning to Malaysia in 1995, Bang Hean has regularly appeared in solo recitals, chamber concerts and concerto performances with various orchestras. He's appeared in most major concert venues in Malaysia and is an active chamber musician, performing frequently with various instrumentalists including members of the National Symphony Orchestra and the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra. Performances abroad include appearances in the UK, Italy, Brunei, Singapore, Indonesia, Hong Kong, Cambodia and South Korea.
Bang Hean is also very much involved in music education and is an adjunct lecturer at the Institute of Music, UCSI University, as well as a frequent seminar presenter and competition adjudicator around the region.
