Adapted exams for Practical and Music Theory exams at Grades 6 to 8

We are making exceptional arrangements for Year 13 (or equivalent) students who would like to take Practical and Music Theory exams at Grade 6 to 8 this summer.

These adapted exams are available for a limited time to assess learners who need a qualification carrying UCAS points to be awarded in summer 2020, in order to progress with their education this year. We will issue results in July 2020.

What you should do now:

  • If you are an applicant, contact your students who are in Year 13 (or the equivalent in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland) and who may want to take an adapted Grade 6 to 8 exam to confirm they want to enter.
  • Read our Guidance for Adapted Exams (2020) to ensure you and others involved understand and can commit to the roles, responsibilities and process.
  • Make sure you have an account with ABRSM. You will need this to book the exam and receive the results. How to register and create your account.
  • Read our guide on How to book exams at a Public Venue - Adapted Exams (2020) using our online service ready for the booking period which opens on Monday 1 June.

Once the Expression of Interest form deadline has passed, we will contact you with details of how to book. The booking period will open on 1 June and close on 8 June.

Expression of Interest Form

Thank you for completing the Expression of Interest, this form is now closed. All applicants who submitted the form will be contacted by email with further details ahead of the booking period which opens next week, 1 June to 8 June.

The Music Theory exam can only take place on the published date at the published time.

For Practical exams, applicants will be able to select a date at the time of booking. This is the date on which all exam submissions must be uploaded and sent to ABRSM.

Exam Booking

Exams must be booked using our online booking service from 1–8 June 2020. A guide on how to make a booking using our online service is available here: How to book exams at a Public Venue - Adapted Exams (2020)

Exam administration and instructions

Once the booking period has closed (on 8 June) we will email applicants to confirm their booking and provide additional information about running the exam. We will also request contact details for the teacher (if the applicant is not the teacher) and responsible adult. Late entry and cancellations

You will not be able to book an adapted exam once the booking period has closed. If you need to cancel your booking, our Withdrawals, Non-Attendance and Fee Refund Policy will apply.

Exam submission

Practical exam (Level 3 Certificate in Graded Examination in Music Performance)

The Practical exam consists of two types of evidence:

  • Audio recording: pieces and scales and arpeggios
  • Teacher-assessed marks: sight-reading and aural tests

These should be submitted to ABRSM electronically on the chosen exam date along with the declarations set out in our Guidance for Adapted Exams.

Music Theory exam (Level 3 Certificate in Graded Examination in Music Theory)

The theory exam will take place on Saturday 4 July at 10am in the candidate’s own home under controlled conditions. We will provide exam materials which should be returned electronically, along with the declarations set out in our Guidance for Adapted Exams, to ABRSM for marking by the specified time.


We will send an email to the applicant when their candidate’s results have been released. The applicant can then log in to their account to view their results. If the candidate has an ABRSM account we will email them seven days after we’ve released the result to the applicant to let them know they can also view their result via their ABRSM account. Certificates will be posted to the applicant.
