What is Melody Writer?

Melody Writer is an online tool for writing and improving melodies using standard music notation. Anyone can use it, but it is specifically designed to help you with the melody writing question in an ABRSM Grade 5 Music Theory exam. This question requires candidates to demonstrate a wide range of skills gained through their study of theory. Because there is a lot to think about, it is easy to overlook things like misplaced bar lines or inaccurate grouping of notes, as well as more musical considerations like shape and direction. We’ve developed Melody Writer to provide practical support to help you develop your melody writing and music theory skills.

Melody Writer is not designed to replace conventional approaches to teaching and learning of music theory but to enhance them. It allows personal practice between lessons, with feedback, and makes it easy to share progress with teachers and friends.

How might I use Melody Writer?

It’s quick and easy to write music using Melody Writer whether you’re starting from scratch or working with a real exam question. It gives you the same level of freedom you have when using pen and paper too.

Students are free to make mistakes and when playing back a tune Melody Writer also offers guidance on ways to improve or correct your work. This feedback is based entirely on the melodies you have written – you could be prompted to check beaming and grouping, the addition of beats in bars, the use of ties, the range of the chosen instrument and much more!

Melody Writer also has a useful section where you can read information to help you develop your understanding of music theory concepts. Once happy with your melodies, you can save or share them with your teacher or friends. Teachers can also see students’ progress at a glance, with the ‘scorecard’ for shared melodies quickly showing where they might need extra help.
