Who we are - our vision

ABRSM is the exam board of the Royal Schools of Music. We are a charity committed to supporting and inspiring people to progress with music. We support high-quality music-making and learning around the world.

Together with our partners, the Royal Academy of Music, the Royal College of Music, the Royal Northern College of Music and the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, ABRSM sets standards in music education.

We encourage students to build skills, knowledge and understanding incrementally to help them unlock their musical potential, whatever their background and whatever part they wish music to play in their lives.

We want everyone to be able to develop musical skills and fulfil their potential with music. We believe that access to high-quality, progressive music learning is the right of everyone.

What we do - our mission

We offer pathways and resources for learners and teachers that help build musical skills, provide goals and encourage progress.

Exams and assessments

ABRSM’s core activity is the provision of graded exams, assessments and diplomas. They motivate students of all levels and ages by offering staging posts and acknowledging their achievements as they progress with music. An ABRSM grade has a worldwide currency and wide recognition.

Resources, events, scholarships and sponsorship

We support teachers and learners with a range of award-winning digital resources and publications.

We offer face-to-face events and professional qualifications.

We work with a variety of organisations in the UK and around the world, providing donations, scholarships and sponsorship.

Founded in 1889, we have 125 years of experience and an international reputation.

Our values

Our passion for music and its positive impact on society drives everything that we do. We share that passion with all our audiences, and we believe everyone has the right to enjoy and excel at music.

Our standards are second to none and our success depends on our integrity, impartiality and authority.

We operate in an open, honest and inclusive way. We are interested in the needs and view of all those who are looking to develop their musical skills, so we can improve our service and products.

We are brave enough to try new things and capitalise on technological change. We are bold enough to speak up for what we believe in.

We value and support the efforts, and recognise the achievements, of teachers and learners at all levels. We treat everyone, outside and inside the organisation, with courtesy and respect.
