Teacher-assessors must be aged 18 or over.

Assessments are available for the following instruments:

Strings - violin, viola, cello, double bass and guitar

Woodwind - flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, recorder and saxophone

Brass - trumpet, cornet, flugelhorn, E flat horn, French horn, baritone, trombone, euphonium and E flat tuba

Getting written consent is the responsibility of the person or organisation making entries. ABRSM has no involvement in the process.

No, you should keep the forms. When you book online, you’ll be asked to confirm that you have parental permission for each participating child.

Supplying a candidate email address is optional.  If you do supply an email address it will allow us to invite them to set up an ABRSM account. With an account, they can log in and view their assessment details and results.

You have 14 days cooling off period to cancel your exam for an automatic refund. Login to your ABRSM account and cancel the exam on your dashboard.

You can now update the following information after you’ve made a booking:

• First name
• Last name
• Date of Birth
• Presented By
• Gender
• Print last name first

Login to your ABRSM account and click on the pen next the name on the exam entry.

Please be aware this is for minor errors made at the time of entry and cannot be used to ‘swap’ candidates.

Refunds are only given in exceptional circumstances, as the eight-week period allowed for each Music Medal gives flexibility for assessments to be rescheduled.

The Option tests will be sent out to the email address on the account of the Teacher-Assessor within 3-5 working days of the entry being made. The Teacher-Assessor has 8 weeks from the date of entry to submit the video and results for the candidate.

You need to choose 'Print as image' – this is a checkbox that'll appear on the 'Print' page in versions 5 and 6 of Adobe Acrobat and in the 'Advanced' menu in version 7.

Recordings must be in one of the following formats: MP4, WMV, MOV or MPG. The file size must not be more than 2GB. If the resolution of the video is too high, the file may be too large or slow to upload. In these circumstances, you can compress the file so that it uploads successfully.

Yes – only one candidate can be assessed per Medal, so you'll need to record three Ensemble-Solo-Option sequences.

They can take place at a time to suit you and your candidates. The choice is yours, and you don't have to let us know the assessment date in advance.

You can make the entry at any time.  The video and results must then be uploaded within 8 weeks of making entry. We recommend that you allow yourself at least 5 working days between booking and the assessment to allow time to receive and download the Option tests .

The teacher-assessor can play a line in the Ensemble section for Copper and Bronze, but not for Silver, Gold and Platinum.

We understand that there may be occasions where it's not possible to have another student play in a duet at Silver, Gold or Platinum level (for example: there's no suitably advanced student, or they're ill on the day). In these cases, we'll accept assessments where the teacher-assessor plays in a duet at Silver, Gold or Platinum level.

The brackets indicate that the line is Copper level and must be played, but it can't be assessed for the purposes of a Medal.

The line should be played by the teacher-assessor, although it may also be played by a suitably advanced student.

The accompanying parts aren't assessed. The ability of a candidate to respond to other players in the ensemble is one of the criteria that can be marked for a Music Medal.

Candidates can play either with an accompaniment (live or CD backing track) or unaccompanied.

This is at your discretion. However, those repeats that are essential to the musical structure must be observed.

No, doubling of lines isn't permitted.

A minimum of two Passes is required for a Medal to be awarded. One of these Passes must be in the Ensemble section.

If a candidate needs extra time, you must obtain an authenticating document or assessment from an educational psychologist, SEN teacher, GP or specialist. This document must outline the particular needs of the candidate and the likely impact on their Music Medals assessment.

Valid documentation must be kept in your files, as ABRSM reserves the right to request this at any time. Please note that all access details must be indicated for every online entry made.

If a candidate needs enlarged or modified Option tests or a Braille Option test, it's assumed that you, the teacher-assessor, will produce these tests from your usual source after downloading the Option tests in the normal way. Please note that all access details must be indicated for every online entry made.

You can restart the assessment as many times as you like up to the point when the Option test is administered. Once the Option test has been administered, the Music Medal can't be restarted. Please bear in mind that we're not judging the quality of the recording!

To make the process of reporting as straightforward as possible, you cross boxes in each grid to indicate particularly significant aspects of the candidate’s performance that have influenced your assessment within each section. Only one section of the options test should be completed ie. Sight Reading.

The digital mark form will be available 14 days after the results have been submitted. However, on occasion additional moderation is required and this can delay the release of results. The certificate and medal will be posted within 7 days of the mark form being published. 

Successful candidates receive a certificate, medal and digital mark form. Candidates who are working towards their Music Medal receive a digital mark form.

Once the results are uploaded, the moderation protocol is then used to decide whether any of the results are to be reviewed by a moderator. Once this is completed, the digital mark form is published within 14 days of the results are submitted and the certificate and medal posted out within 7 days of the mark form becoming available. The video will be kept for 130 days from date of upload, then permanently destroyed.

When moving over to the new system, we were not able to transfer the commentary function. In an effort to reduce our carbon footprint, like our other exams, have eliminated the printed mark form. The new online mark forms are easy to download and share, and can be printed. They will be on your account for you to access for future reference. Candidates with an ABRSM account will also be able to access their digital mark form 7 days after it has been released to the applicant.

The confidential Option tests can be seen and printed by the Teacher-Assessor, and their security and confidentiality must be maintained at all times.

Tests may be handled only by the Teacher-Assessor and mustn't be seen by the candidate before the assessment. The confidentiality of assessments and video content must be maintained at all times.

The assessments and videos must be kept securely and out of sight of any third party, including candidates.

No, this is no longer possible.

Check that your assessments complied with the regulations:

• At least two sections must be passed for a Medal to be awarded
• The Ensemble section must be passed for a Medal to be awarded
• All three sections must achieve Excellent for an overall Excellent to be awarded (Bronze to Platinum levels only)

If you want to appeal the moderator’s decision please email [email protected] with your concerns within 28 days after receiving the result. Appeals can take 4 weeks to resolve and there is no fee for Music Medal appeals.

The video is kept for 130 days from date the video is submitted. This is to allow for time in case of an appeal. The video is then destroyed.
